How Drone Surveys Cut Our Site Risk Assessment Time by 60%

Monthly drone overflights, combined with photogrammetry and AI-assisted volume measurement, have changed how we manage earthworks, progress, and safety compliance.

In 2023 we integrated drone photogrammetry into our standard site management protocol. The decision was driven initially by earthworks volume measurement — a process that previously required a licensed surveyor on site for half a day. Today, a single drone flight takes 25 minutes and produces a point cloud accurate to ±20mm.

Earthworks and Volumes

On excavation and groundworks projects, we fly monthly. The photogrammetry software produces a cut-and-fill analysis against the design model automatically, allowing us to verify subcontractor progress for interim payment purposes and to identify divergence from the earthworks plan before it becomes a significant problem. On the Grid Core Hub project, a drone survey identified a 3,200 m³ shortfall in fill compaction before the drainage contractor arrived on site.

Monthly drone overflights on projects above 5 hectares have reduced our earthworks quantity dispute resolution time from an average of 3 weeks to under 48 hours.

Safety Compliance Inspection

Our safety team uses drone footage in a secondary review role. After the site inspection, the drone footage is reviewed systematically for edge protection gaps, unsecured materials at height, plant proximity to excavations, and housekeeping compliance. The drone captures areas that a walking inspection may miss — particularly on large floor plates and multi-level structures.

Programme Reporting

Drone imagery has replaced manual progress photography in our monthly client reports. A georeferenced orthophoto, overlaid with the programme zones, gives clients an unambiguous picture of progress that a site visit or written report cannot match. Client satisfaction with reporting has measurably improved since we introduced drone-based updates.

  • Survey time reduction: 25 minutes drone flight vs. 4 hours traditional survey
  • 60% reduction in site risk assessment preparation time for monthly safety audits
  • Zero earthworks volume disputes on drone-monitored projects since 2023
  • Drone footage reviewed within 4 hours of each flight by safety team
